Blowback Rig

The Blowback Rig How To Tie It

The blowback rig is very often used by carp anglers especially when using  snowman hook bait. This type of rig has two major advantages: it allows the hook bait to have free movement and it also stops the hair from getting entangled with the cast.

The blowback rig has been created keeping in mind several other rigs. So the creator has taken the best features of a number of other rigs and has created the really effective blowback rig. The highlight aof this rig is its capacity of hooking. Carp are a clever and cunning fish and have on some waters learned to get away with it, the blowback rig was designed to help combat this and help the angler to outwit rig wary carp.

A micro ring is tied to the hair so that the bait has free vertical movement, the idea behind this is if the carp should blow the bait. The bait slides along the shank of the hook allowing the hook to be set. The addition of the micro ring also makes the rig harder for the fish to eject, switching to this rig can sometimes increase your hook up rate if you have been missing fish on the regular hair rig. I have had some success with this rig especially when using boilies as hook bait. As I think it works best with a heavier bait which allow the mechanics of the rig to come into play more so than if you were using a lighter bait such as a small particle.

More often than not carp anglers using this rig find that fish are hooked perfectly in the bottom lip.  An additional trick here to help the hook flip over and grab hold is to place some shrink tubing  over the eye of the hook and steam it at an angle of the eye of the hook. Although predominately a rig which is tied using longer shanked hooks it can also be used on shorter shanked hooks using shrink tubing.

This piece of shrink tubing is sometimes referred to as a ‘shrink tube kicker’ and is often used on shorter shanked hooks to increase the hook hold capabilities of the rig. I have used this type of rig on a number of occasions and as mentioned already it can be deadly with a snowman bait but I have found it to be equally as effective using a pop up bait. As far as hook choice goes there are many purpose made hook patterns available, but my favorite has to be the Korda  Kurv pattern. That aggressive Kurv nails them big time when used in conjunction with the blowback rig.

The following pictures and instructions will show you how to tie the blowback rig and give you a better understanding of how it works.
