I've watched the video several times and have a few questions:
1..What is SCM?.....just shelled corn or cracked corn?
2..I'm guessing you avoid any salt containing iodine?
3..I found "chicken feed" at my local Farm & Fleet but they have several kinds. Do I want the one for "layers" or the one for chickens being raised for meat?
4..Is this for a single session or can it be reused if kept refrigerated?
5.. If you make a large batch, could it be packaged and frozen for later use?
6..Can it be used in all water temperatures or is it primarily a summer time bait?....maybe use additives like chili pepper or pineapple for colder water and maybe strawberry or tutti-fruti for warmer water?

I also spotted a couple of other types of feed at F&F and wondered about using some of them....hog pellets and horse feed?? What is in the Calf Mana that makes this the item to use.

I guess that's enough questions for a bit. I've got lots more but this should kick-start some activity on the forum and give me something to work on for my winter carp league.

Ahh great questions Larry :D

I'll answer with my own opinions on the subject.

1. SCM stand for Steam Crimped Maize...also known as steam crimped corn at the feedstores.
2. Sea salt...large granular is my preference
3. The chicken feed to look for is called "Layena Poultry Feed". It comes in a bluish bag. The Product comes in two forms..one is a pellet and the other is crumbles. The crumbles are much much easier to deal with and is what I would recomend.
4. It's really for a session. You could use it again but I believe fresh is best.
5. No, the starch breakdown really screws with the binding properties.
6. I've used it from 40-70 degree waters and find that it works best in rivers. I find it fishes great as is, but if you wish to customize and compare results then I would recomend "natural" items such as any of the following: brown sugar, cinnamon, honey, mollases, coconut, milk powders, tomato powder chili powder, etc..

The Calf-Manna is attractive because of the milk proteins and the anise flavor. It's a very strong product....meaning a lil goes a long way.

There are horse feeds that are ok, but you MUST WATCH OUT for them as their often medicated and this goes for many products at feedstores. READ THE LABELS well and avoid anything that contains medication.

Once you have the items to make yourself a batch the mix is really inexpensive.

Items you will need:

Calf-Manna Pellets...come in 10, 25, or 50 lb bags.
Steam Crimped Corn...comes in 50lb sack
Old Fashion Oats...I prefer the Grocery store brands over the feedstore crap. I like Quacker and the knockoff brands.
Sea Salt

Kev customized his recipe by including the Layena Poultry feed.

Click on the pic to make a lil bigger. You will see the difference in the three types of corn. The one in the middle is the Steam Crimped Corn.

The Steam Crimped corn is what I prefer for a couple reasons:

Very short boil time compared to the deer corn on the left
Not as gooey as the cracked corn on the right
The biggest difference is the ability to hair rig the flattened pieces of corn that have absorbed the anise flavoring by simpy picking them out of the mix and adding a piece or two to your hookbait selections or fishing them as is.

Could you use the combo as you suggested....sure give it a try and see how it works out for ya.

Part of the fun about this sport is doing whatever the heck you want and learning things for yourself. :D

A lot of dudes will say keep it simple, but I say Have fun and experiment and do what ever floats your boat

Thanks for the tips. I'll keep my eyes open for the SCM. I'm with you on loving to experiment. I have several large storage bins chuck full of just about anything ever mentioned for bait making........but no SCM !! LOL

I use ALOT of Calf Mana!!
It is easy and I can get a fresh bag down the street!

Some tips that I found work well with calfa mana and other things as well

1. Blend it into powder and mix it with Steam rolled oats flower;)
2. PVA bag or mesh it
3. Spod it (or kayak it in my case) then fish your method on top of it;)

Dave...good tips!
Question...."steam rolled oats flower"....I did manage to find a source for steam rolled oats. I take it to mean that you also grind them into powder?

I have a brother that kayaks on my favorite venue about 3 or 4 days/week. You know what his 2nd job is for me!! LOL

Yeah, I picked up a 50# bag of Steam rolled oats, and spend an afternoon with 4 blenders making enough to last me most of the year;)

Thanks to everyone for the help with the SCM/Calf Manna/ Layena method mix. I spiked it with some aniseed and boiled up some maize & anise extract for the hook bait. Worked great today. Netted 8 fish with several over ten pounds.

I made a half batch from the video, sealed it in an airtight container, and let it set overnight. I'm not sure why I had to keep adding quite a bit of water all morning to keep it packable......like more than 1/2 L.

A can of cream corn to touch it up helps the binding when needed...

Down here in Texas a lot of guys use plain calf manna as a method mix. Just add a little water, let it set about 20 minutes, and it packs well and breaks up quickly. If you want it to last longer (as a method ball) you can mix in quick oats or bread crumbs.
Plain calf manna was used by Chris 'buffaloman' a couple of weekend ago to draw in a 58 and 49 buff that I had the pleasure of netting for him!
